Almost every nation have now unveiled their home and away kits for the 2018 World Cup. We've seen throwback designs, minimal pieces, and statement graphics, but nothing as of yet from Morocco.
The Moroccan FA and kit supplier adidas have received criticism from fans about the delay when other nations are being supplied. With Morocco competing in their first World Cup in 20 years there's a buzz building in the country and fans are anxious to see the new designs for Russia. The national team have remained in their 2017 AFCoN shirts this year. But, there's a strong reason behind the decision for a delayed launch.
Moroccan newspaper Al Maasae are reporting that the Moroccan FA and adidas officials have mutually agreed to delay the official unveiling for as long as possible due to concerns over forgery. Football shirt counterfeits is a big business in Morocco, with fake shirts lining the streets in the cities. From Messi, to Ronaldo, to any popular club you can think of.
If the Moroccan FA and adidas were to release the shirts a few months before the World Cup, that would give forgers the chance to replicate the design and sell in masses for a much cheaper price – ultimately damaging shirts sales and resulting in a loss of revenue. With just over two months left until the World Cup kicks off, we can expect a release anytime soon.
