Nike have their released first next generation release of the decade in the form of the PhantomVSN II, and while one design will be front and centre on pitch, a secondary drop that’s been stripped of colour also arrives to kick off the ‘Kinetic Black’ pack.

Following in the footsteps of the next generation Mercurial launch last year, Nike has provided two options for the new PhantomVSN II, with the ‘Future Lab’ edition being joined by the ‘Kinetic Black’ release. While the ‘Future Lab’ will be the colourway that’s supported on pitch by the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, it’s the ‘Kinetic Black’ that will undoubtedly attract equal if not more attention from the wider game, thanks to its sleek and understated look.

The PhantomVSN II develops on its predecessor, taking what worked and building on it for a new take on control. It’s presented in a revamped and streamlined silhouette, which complements Nike’s shift of the boot to a more attacking approach. The collar has been lowered slightly, while the Swoosh and signature control triangle have been shifted forward to emphasise the move to faster attacking.

One of the main modifications comes in the texturised control element, which is significantly reengineered and informed by four different quadrants — medial trap zone, strike zone, knuckle zone and dribble zone. As the ball travels through each one, the volume of the texture is adjusted up and down to accommodate these movements.

The tech upgrades are subtle, with the main focus of the changes for the PhantomVSN II being more focused on the overall comfort and control. And with the “Kinetic Black” being so appealing, it’s good to know that the PhantomVSN II will also offer up options for the small-sided game, with Nike React cushioning taking its place in the midsole and providing an additional level of comfort for the turf and courts.
