Biggest update in the Free collection's ten year history.

Born out of Nike's co-founder Bill Bowerman famous words 'It’s all about the feet – it’s not about the shoes', the Nike Free concept was first brought to life in 2004. Since then top athletes around the world have been competing, running and training in the shoes, footballers included.

Ten years on and Nike are still pushing the boundaries of footwear design with the all-new Nike Free 3.0 Flyknit, Nike Free 4.0 Flyknit, and Nike Free 5.0. Allowing runners to choose the level of flexibility and close-to-the-ground ride they desire, the Nike Free 3.0 Flyknit offers the most flexibility but least cushioning whilst the Nike Free 5.0 offers the most comfort. The Nike 4.0 sits between the two.

Working with data obtained from Nike’s sport research lab data and athlete insights, the design team knew multi-directional flexibility was key to delivering natural motion in a shoe. To achieve this, the 2014 collection features three of the most significant developments in Nike Free since its 2004 launch - Hexagonal Flex Grooves, an anatomical shape and Nike FlyKnit Technology.

“After 10 years of continual innovation, we've truly revolutionized the way these shoes work,” said Rob Dolan, Senior Footwear Design Director, Nike Running. “By utilizing new technologies and the principles of natural motion, we’re really able to allow the foot to move for the runner in a way we’ve never been able to do before.”
