Is The adidas Glitch Set For A Leading World Cup Role?

The Glitch fix remains locked into the adidas 2018 World Cup plans as France defenders Benjamin Mendy and Presnel Kimpembe both trained in more unreleased outer-skins designs this afternoon.

Mendy and Kimpembe both revealed a World Cup Glitch skin inspired by the French flag earlier this week, and now they've each slipped into a custom creation ahead of the tournament kick off in Russia in two weeks time. The Glitch looks set to play a pivotal role this summer as adidas have supplied the disruptive two-piece silo to more leading players, including Argetnina's Paulo Dybala.

Both players here look to have been given their own custom Glitch designs, possibly self-designed, as Mendy plays on his famous "Shark Team" nickname for Manchester City with a Jaws-themed upper display, and Kimpembe goes black and white in another creative graphic. We'd take a punt on both players wearing the French flag design in the opening group game before switching into their bespoke skins later in the tournament.

The strongest focus from adidas will no doubt be on the "Energy Mode" pack that covers the X, Nemeziz, Predator, and COPA silos, but the Three Stripes are shining more spotlight on the Glitch concept which indicates they may have bigger plans for the boot for the 18/19 season. The two-piece construction is intriguing, and the Glitch has been round long enough now for adidas to make a decision on what its next move is.

The personalisation game is big. Players love to customise their boots to make them different and the Glitch is the ultimate canvas for that creative custom culture. Could the World Cup be the tournament where the Glitch is promoted to the adidas first team? It certainly looks that way.

The Glitch launched in October 2016 and has so far played a low-key role in the adidas boot stable. It launched exclusively in the UK via an app, and then in Germany and France, only being worn by a small number of adidas young professionals. But, the appearance of the silo on the feet of Dybala, Kimpembe and Mendy on the biggest of stages could suggest that adidas could be bringing the Glitch to the market in some style.
