In a flash of lightweight, eco-friendly brilliance, Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappé took to the floodlit Parc des Princes pitch against Liverpool in the Nike Mercurial Superfly Green Speed 360.
That Mbappé was set to wear the Mercurial Superfly GS in the Champions League against Liverpool was hardly the best kept secret, the Frenchman training in them the day before in preparation. But to see them on the pitch six years after now PSG teammate Neymar debuted the original was a particularly satisfying bit of symmetry.
Despite its revolutionary construction and lightweight design, the original Green Speed was uncomfortable to wear, however there were no signs of Mbappé being hampered by such concerns as he terrorised the Liverpool defence in trademark fashion. In a blur of Green Speed, it was his run down the left that led to Neymar slotting home PSG’s second as the Parisians gave their hopes of qualification from the group stages a huge boost, the game ending 2-1.
Only 2018 pairs of the new Green Speed boots were released earlier this week, and they sold out almost instantly, in similar fashion to the other boot that debuted in the match, Sadio Mané’s New Balance Furon ‘Bambaly’.
So that's it from the Green Speed. For now at least...
