Cristiano Ronaldo's signature Nike Mercurial line looks set for a stunning revival as the man himself showcased a CR7 special edition Mercurial Superfly VI design as he stepped out to train with his Juventus teammates this afternoon. More golden recognition for Nike's most celebrated footballing icon.
Nike had put Ronaldo's signature line on hold after his 7-boot 'Chapter Series' came to a conclusion in September last year, with the Juve forward switching into the recent 'LVL UP' design which was also worn by Kylian Mbappe and Sam Kerr. That move left many wondering whether Ronaldo was about to make way for Mbappe or Neymar as Nike crowned a new king of Swoosh, but you can not write this man off. His Mercurial legacy fights on with strength.
The design, which has yet to be confirmed by Nike, is likely to be another commemorative and limited edition release and will quite clearly only be worn by CR7 himself. Until Nike break silence fans will have to wait to see if the Swoosh opt to release a restricted amount, or whether they've just made one off pair for the man himself.
As for the design, there's no confusion over who these belong to. The CR7 series has seen it all, from the subtle and classy to the bold and brave, but these are out on their own in terms of unique visuals. 'CR7STIANO' printed in bold white across the black upper with premium gold detailing and matching soleplate. Very Ronaldo.
Perhaps Nike were waiting for Cristiano and Juve to secure a spot in the Champions League semi-finals before they unveiled this design for Ronaldo to ultimately wear and lift another Champions League title in. Ajax ripped up that script, but at least Ronaldo will be able to wear them when his side lift the Serie A title, becoming the first player to win top flight titles in England, Spain and Italy.
