Global Boot Spotting

Kicking off the week in standard fashion we’ve scoured all corners of the globe to pick out the best new releases, throwback classics, special editions and customised creations. Let’s see who made the Boot Spotting cut this week…

Memphis Depay (Lyon) Under Armour Magnetico SL

Memphis is one of only a few top-level players still wearing Under Armour boots, and the Dutchman was seen in a new colourway of the Magnetico as he trained ahead of Lyon's match with Toulouse. He bagged a brain the game, the second of which was a stoppage time winner in the 3-2 win.

Kohshiro Sumi (Japan U17) PUMA King Torero

The boots worn by Diego Maradona at his first ever World Cup in 1982 are a fairly easy spot due to the beautifully over-sized tongue flapping around like a flag in the wind. And that's how we spotted the PUMA King Torero on the feet of Kohshiro Sumi at the FIFA U-17 World Cup match between Japan and Senegal, a match the former won 1-0.

Samson Tijani (Nigeria U17) Nike Mercurial Superfly VII and Phantom VSN

Yeah, bit of a weird one this. Nigeria U17 captain, Samson Tijani either lost one of his boots or he was making some sort of statement in Nigeria's 2-1 loss against Australia, as he played in two different boots: a Mercurial Superfly VII 'New Lights' on his right foot, and a Phantom VSN 'Game Over' on his left.

Isaac Brizuela (Chivas) Umbro UX Accuro 3

In the Liga MX match between Toluca and Chivas, Isaac Brizuela was spotted wearing a pair of Umbro UX Accuro 3 that had been specially customised by @elpintacuadros. The artwork was situated on the heel of the boot, with the recent "White/Plum" colourway providing the perfect canvas.

Greg Bolger (Shamrock Rovers) Nike Hypervenom

Special occasions call for special boots, and Shamrock Rovers' Greg Bolger decided to pull out a pair of OG Hypervenoms from 2013 for his side's FAI Cup final match against Dundalk this week. The eye-catching design was launched as part of the Nike "Hi-Vis" collection, and it certainly did its job when Bolger came off the bench to help his side win the game on penalties.

Victor Malcorra (Pumas) Nike Mercurial Vapor V

2009 was brought back into focus in the Torneo Apertura 2019 Liga MX match between Pumas UNAM and Atlas, when Pumas' Victor Malcorra donned the now decade-old Nike Mercurial Vapor V in the "Orange/Abyss/ Silver" colourway in the comfortable 5-1 win.

Ethan Robson (Grimsby Town) Nike Mercurial Superfly VII

Another great example of what's possible with the Nike By You service, with Grimsby's Ethan Robson personalising his Mercurial Superfly VII boots to match the colours of his club's kit, as seen in the U21 Leasing.com Trophy defeat against Leicester this week.

Andreas Tello (Benevento Calcio) Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII

For Benevento Calcio's 2-0 win over Empoli in Serie B this week Andreas Tello opted for 2012's Mercurial Vapor VIII in the "Seaweed/Volt/Challenge Red" colourway. This release toned down the look of the Vapor VIII following a string of brighter visuals, but its an effort that still looks good on-pitch today.

Chris Eagles (Oldham Athletic) Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII

Another appearance for the Vapor VIII, this time in one of the aforementioned brighter visuals. The "Mango/Grey" colourway was spotted on the feet of Oldham's Chris Eagles as the Latics played out a 2-2 draw with Northampton.

Manuel Lazzari (Lazio) Lotto Solista 200 III

Lazio snatched a 2-1 win against struggling AC Milan this week, and wing-back Manuel Lazzari was seen wearing the Lotto Solista 200 III. The laced version of Lotto's latest still features a one-piece seamless upper, which looks particularly effective in the "Cool Grey/Orange Fluo" colourway.

Alex Baumjohann (Sydney FC) adidas 11Pro III

Sydney FC bounced back after their derby loss last week with a resounding 4-1 over the Newcastle Jets. Attacking midfielder, Alex Baumjohann didn't manage to get on the scoresheet, but he did have the most notable boots, wearing 2014's adidas 11Pro III in the "White/Black/Flash Orange" colourway.
