Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been getting attention for all the right reasons this season, and he’s back on our radar today, this time for his interesting footwear choice, with the Everton striker wearing a mystery pair of blackout boots in training.
Arguably in the form of his life, DCL has been banging in the goals so far this season, enjoying the new regime at Everton under Carlo Ancelotti. The striker is normally a Nike Mercurial Vapor man, so it was interesting to see him training today in a mystery blackout boot. Obviously Nike have what is likely to be the prototype of the next-generation Mercurial doing the rounds currently, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho putting it through its paces. So it would make sense for this to be that, only it’s not…
A quick glance at both the new Mercurial and the boot DCL is wearing is all that is needed to identify that this is in fact not the former. It actually bears a striking resemblance to the whiteout boot that Raheem Sterling has been wearing of late, heavily rumoured to be a New Balance creation. So could this be DCL testing the waters of other brands? It’s inevitable that, being in the form that he’s is in right now, he’d be getting attention from all quarters. And with the sudden elevation in his goal-scoring return, it’s unlikely that he’d be currently commanding a huge contract with Nike. So could New Balance be looking at yet another addition to their ranks?
The boot itself sees a leather upper with a low-cut sock-fit collar, not too dissimilar to the Furon, if we were making comparisons – next generation perhaps. Unlike the boots Sterling was wearing though, which were white with a standout golden soleplate, DCL’s are the standard blackout that you’d expect from a prototype, possibly because, unlike Sterling who is a free agent, the Everton man is still under contract…
