With the last four lying in wait for the victors of this Women's Champions League quarter final, the Stade des Lumières let the light beam through as Lyon hosted Wolfsburg. A match up for the mighty elite, it was a turbulent take in as fans turned out in force.
The ever growing support that surrounds the women's game is a pleasantry that deserves more praise. With the Champions League the tournament on show, those enormous club's and their beautiful stadiums have set the stage and helped build on the momentum. Going into this game, Lyon led with a two goal advantage. So the game was very much in their ground. Wolfsburg taking strides into an uphill battle however, they certainly didn't go quietly on this occasion. Both teams causing a stir at each end neither could break through solid defending, despite a wealth of creative flair on show, until the 82nd minute. Wolfsburg handed a penalty as well as a hope, the last eight minutes was where it was all to play for.
With Alex Morgan in their ranks, their is naturally a growing number of eyes that watch these European giants of the Women's game. Both Lyon and Wolfsburg have dominated this tournament before so it's no surprise that those last eight minutes were fought with tooth and nail. However, the upper hand Lyon possessed, and the sturdy cement of their back line, meant they were able to hang on and hold out, despite the defeat on the night. 0-1 on the night, 2-1 on aggregate. Lyon book their place in the last four and march on, silverware in sight.
