In an impressive stadium packed to the absolute rafters with vibrant colours and pulsing with pride aplenty, fans gathered for a derby like few others in the world. This was the Soweto derby, which saw rivals Kaizer Chiefs taking on Orlando Pirates at Soccer City. And it just had to be the next entry in our ‘Framed’ series.
Tickets for the hotly anticipated derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates sold out, delivering a capacity audience that was packed with passion. With kick off delayed, tension was palpable in the FNB Stadium as nearly 90,000 fans anticipated the contest to come.
The Chiefs came into the game – the 166th derby between the two – having lost the last three against the Pirates. There was a lot at stake here, with the home fans demanding a result. And it was the Chiefs that opened the scoring, Daniel Cardosa slotting from the penalty spot to send the home fans into raptures at the beginning of the second half.
But it wasn’t to last. The Pirates’ persistence paid off when Thembinkosi Lorch grabbed the equaliser in the 81st minute, giving his side a share of the spoils and denying the Chiefs a memorable victory. The Pirates are now unbeaten in the last 12 derby clashes against their bitter rivals, much to the disappointment of the home fans.
