Away from the Premier League glamour of their neighbours from across the River Mersey, it's through the Queensway Tunnel to the Wirral for the next stop on our Residence series at Tranmere Rovers. Prenton Park is a beautifully British football stadium rooted in identity and Birkenhead pride.
Having undergone many a makeover, a hefty chunk of English football heritage remains on show at Prenton Park. Boxed in by a towering Kop offering panoramic views across to the City of Liverpool, Anfield and Goodison Park are physical and metaphorical dots on the horizon in these parts as Tranmere write their own stories. Back in the Football League, back where they belong, in a stadium steeped in character.
Surrounded by houses that give a real old school feel to whole match day experience, Prenton Park is what your old man would call a 'proper football stadium' – four individual stands of character, all representing different chapters in the history of the area. From World War Two damage to the replacement of the Cow Shed and the terraced Kop – the constant development of Prenton Park tells tales of a historic club in the most fanatic footballing corner of the country.
Prenton Park, originally opened in 1912, has a current capacity of just over 16,500. The fifth largest stadium in League Two for the 2018/19 season.
Below: The top rows of the Kop at Prenton Park deliver beautiful panoramic views over the Mersey River towards Liverpool Waterfront and City Centre.
Prenton Park has previously been the home for the Liverpool U23 team, but this season it hosts the Liverpool Ladies team in the Super League 1.
Back in the Football League with one of the most impressive stadiums in League Two. Tranmere Rovers are on the up, and Prenton Park is slow beginning to reach the level of football that its characterful four stands and good people deserve.
