Nike Draw Influence From BVB Classic For New Sportswear Shirt

Drawing on the wild designs of the 90s, Nike has released two new short-sleeve knit tops in its Sportswear 2020 collection, and they feature a design that takes more than a little inspiration from the striking Borussia Dortmund 1994/95 jersey.

As we all know, the 90s was a different time for shirt design; a lawless time of unrivalled creativity, and we loved it. So much so that we’ve recently dipped back into our favourite kits of Euro ’96, but that’s losing focus on the point at hand. That being a new shirt, released by Nike in two colourways, that harks back to one of the wildest designs of the time, the ‘winged’ BVB jersey from the 94/95 season.

The vibrant world of 90s jersey design is enjoying a revival, and the design of the sportswear shirt is testament to that, with a fiery take on classic football shirt culture style. Accompanying the volt and black look is a red and black colourway that adopts the same base features in its design, including that wing-print graphic on the sleeves, borrowed straight from the BVB classic.

Modern updates include the white Swoosh repeated vertically down the front, the “sportswear” wording on the side, and the “Nike” gothic-like font taking up the sponsor position. The only thing missing from this reinterpretation? The Nike Futura logo. It’s recently made a return on a selection of Nike’s 19/20 third shirts, and its appearance here would have been the perfect sign off. Ah well, can’t have it all.
