Diadora’s 70th anniversary celebrations continue as they pay homage to three legends of the game with the ‘Golden Boy’ collection. Fusing Italian style with recognisable football design and craftmanship, Diadora create a statement sneaker collection that brings football nostalgia to the streets.
The name says it all here really, with the ‘Golden Boy’ collection comprising of three special edition trainers to celebrate three special players: Marco Van Basten, Roberto Baggio and George Weah, all of whom went on to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or with Diadora on their feet. In fact, were it not for the Kronos wearing Hristo Stoichkov spoiling the party in 1994, Diadora would have dominated the award from ’92 through to ’95. Add Van Basten’s previous back-to-back awards in ’88 and ’89 and it was a truly golden period for the Italian brand.
All three trainers in the collection are inspired by the iconic boots that the players wore in their prime, with Van Basten’s boot featuring some classic "Black/Fluo Orange" throwbacks, Baggio’s coming with "Black/Fluo Yellow" trim and finally George Weah’s in an unmistakeable "Ferrari Red/Italy White" look. With all three you get that premium execution and that ‘Handmade in Italy’ quality that’s synonymous with Diadora.
The quality doesn’t end on the outside either; besides the comfort, there’s also a nice touch inside the shoes too, with the removable insoles boasting the shirts and numbers of the respective and legendary three players. Diadora are making some mighty strong moves to see out the year, with the 'Golden Boy' collection following the HANON x Diadora Pallone d'Oro drop last month.
