Barcelona dropped points to allow Real Madrid to close the gap in Spain, Roma continued their fine form to remain top of Serie A. Elsewhere, Bayern Munich smashed seven goals and Marseille closed in on a ninth crown.
Real Madrid closed within a point of Barcelona after a goalless draw with Espanyol, Barca were reduced to ten men after Dani Alves was sent off. Real Madrid took advantage with a 2-0 victory over Valencia, thanks to goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sevilla returned to winning ways with a comfortable 3-0 win over nine-man Sporting Gijon, but Mallorca currently occupy the last Champions League place thanks to a victory over Osasuna, while Villarreal edged out Atletico Madrid 2-1.

There was a great victory for Bayern Munich, who struck seven goals past Hannover in their 7-0 win, Arjen Robben, Ivica Olic and Thomas Muller were all among the goals, to maintain their two-point advantage over Schalke.
Schalke downed Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1, to keep up the pressure on Bayern and maintain a clear advantage over Werder Bremen, who saw off Wolfsburg 4-2 in a thrilling game. Stuttgart overcame 10-man Bayer Leverkusen, who continue their slide down the Bundesliga after their promising start to the season.

Roma notched a sixth victory on the spin to maintain their one-point lead at the top of Serie A, beating fierce rivals Lazio 2-1 in an adrenaline fuelled game thanks to two goals from Mirko Vucinic.
Inter Milan were successful on Friday with a good 2-0 win over Juventus, but neighbours AC Milan are now out of the title race after a 90th minute goal from Pazzini gave Sampdoria a 2-1 victory, who have moved into fourth place.

Marseille have maintained their five-point lead at the top of Ligue 1, and are closing in on a ninth title thanks to a dramatic 2-1 victory against Boulogne, courtesy of a 90th minute penalty.
Auxerre remain in tow after comprehensively beating Lorient 4-1. Elsewhere, Bordeaux and Lyon played out a terrific four-goal encounter ending in a 2-2 draw with three players sent off! While Lille thrashed Monaco 4-0, with Yohan Cabaye netting twice.
