SoccerBible World Cup Update - 29/06/10
It's the final round of last 16 matches, to determine which sides will be playing in the World Cup quarter finals. In action on day 18 are Paraguay versus Japan and Spain versus Portugal.
There are some interesting boot match-ups today, with David Villa in adiZero coming up against Nike Elite Superfly wearer Cristiano Ronaldo in the speed category. Whilst the Paraguay Japan match will feature the two main Mizuno Wave Ignitus players, a boot that has impressed at the tournament, with Keisuke Honda facing Roque Santa Cruz.
Yesterday, two of the tournament favourites Brazil and Holland were in great form and cruised into the quarter finals to face each other in what should be a great game. There were exceptional individual performances from the likes of Arjen Robben and Kaka, but more impressive was the strength of the team.
There's been plenty to discuss at the World Cup, along with some interesting boot spotting, some great team play and plenty to look forward to. Check out the SoccerBible's view on the latest goings on in South Africa...
Alexis Sanchez (Chile) |
Gregory Van Der Wiel (Holland) |
Not tempted by the Elite versions, Sanchez has stuck with his yellow Superfly I football boots with Nike (RED) laces, and the tricky forward has certainly caught the eye at this tournament with some great performances. |
The Tricks v1.10 football boots are a great match for the Dutch football strip, but it will be interesting to see whether Der Wiel switches into the the JB Final versions, designed for the latter stages of the World Cup. |
It was Nike Elite Superfly wearer Luis Fabiano who finished the move coolly rounding the goalkeeper, but only after some excellent running from Robinho and a perfectly executed pass from Kaka, a deft touch from his adidas adiPure III WC football boots.
Spain v Portugal
The game not to be missed today is between Iberian neighbours Spain and Portugal. Two years ago to the day of this match, Spain finally broke their major tournament duck and lifted the European Championship trophy, but if they are to go one step further and lift the World Cup they will need to up their performance against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.
It's a great battle of speed football boots for the key players of Spain and Portugal, with star players David Villa and Cristiano Ronaldo. Players of rival football clubs and rival nations, both Villa and Ronaldo wear speed boots but for rival brands, and the outcome of this game will be decided by whichever player has the better game.
Both the adidas F50 adiZero football boots and David Villa have been in great form this tournament, finding the back of the net and looking deadly in front of goal. Cristiano on the other hand has yet to set the tournament alight, with just the game against North Korea a highlight, although this could be rather ominous for Spain if the Nike Elite Superfly wearer hits form.
This should be a great match between two sides that play great football, but there can only be one winner so will it be Spain or Portugal? Have YOUR say and share your opinions on the World Cup!
