The Future of Football? Nike Unveil the Next Nike+

The Future of Football? Nike Unveil the Next Nike+

The Nike Innovation Summit in New York has already staged the unveiling of many revolutionary new products including Nike Flyknit - a new lightweight performance innovation. And now the American sports giants have one more launch up their sleeves, and it's a big one! Nike have today pulled the curtains from the all new Nike+ Basketball and Nike+ training. Nike+ just got a lot more intelligent!

Yes, it's Nike's rival to miCoach! Although it may be limited to basketball and running for now, the new performance monitoring technology is a set to revolutionise Nike products across all sports. Sport is changing and Nike have shown their cards! Football fans may have to wait a little longer, but check out what Nike's new technology has to offer.

Nike+ Basketball and Nike+ Training are two new experiences that conncect digitly enabled footwear with interactive mobile applications that together deliver a revolutionary sport experience. The new Nike+ Basketball experience breaks down the user's game to deliver information and measurement, which in turn provides motivation.

The most important aspect of the new Nike+ technology is the Nike+ Pressure Sensor that is built into each shoe that collects information about the user's movement and then wirelessly transmites data to their phone. It is then translated into different metrics delivering previously unknown information about either their workout or their game.

The experience fuses the appeal of gaming with high-intensity fitness to create the ''the perfect training companion to a 24/7/365 lifestyle''. Workout statistics can be shared and compared with friends via social networks allowing users to challenge each other and compete to top the Leaderboard.

NIKE, Inc. President and CEO Mark Parker unveiled the new Nike+ technology at the Nike Innovation Summit in New York. "NIKE+ allows us to connect the physical world of sport with the social elements of digital to create a better sport experience for every athlete," said Parker.  "It s about much more than a shoe.  It represents a shift for NIKE from product, to product + experiences."

Nike+ Training will also feature insights from some of the world's top athletes including Rafa Nadal, Manny Pacquiao, Allyson Felix and Hope Solo, making elite level training available to everyone. The first Nike+ enabled Basketball shoe will be te Nike Hyperdunk+ which will be worn by LeBron James this summer.

"I think Nike+ Basketball will change the game," said LeBron James. "Giving every player access to this level of information will have a huge impact on the way players train and play the game."

"When you're growing up and playing the game of basketball, your friends are your competition," said James. "Young players will be excited to track their stats to earn bragging rights or showcase their best plays on video.  They ll be anxious to get back out on the court to improve their stats."

First unveiled for running products in 2006, Nike+ has grown into a community of six million digitally connected athletes and is set to expand with the recent launch of the NIKE+ FuelBand. But now Nike have taken their technology a step further, equipping each Nike+ shoe with a clever pressure sensor built into the sole that works with the existing motion tracking technology.

The sensor-in-the-shoe gizmo will provide information that allows athletes to monitor and share their game like never before, and when accompanied with the Nike+ apps, create a new world of digital exercise measurement!

The idea is to bring an elite-level sports lab direct to your iPhone. Nike+ Training technology means that everything from squat jumps to rope skips can be accurately tracked to build up a more advanced picture of any work out. In conjunction with the recently revealed Nike+ FuelBand, the data recorded will count towards your overall Nike Fuel score - Nike's new currency for telling us how hard we're working on a daily basis.

For us, the real excitement comes with what Nike+ can bring to football boots. We would expect it to deliver everything and more that its rival platform - the adidas miCoach system - offers but with key differences coming within the digital platform that stores and compares the  performance data.

For us football fans though, we will have to watch on with envy as our American b-ball friends reap the first benefits and experiences of Nike+. LeBron James and co. will launch the system this summer with the new Nike Hyperdunk+, while it will also be available in the Nike Lunar Hyperworkout+ for women and the Lunar TR 1+ for men.

Nike have set the ball rolling with the launch of Nike+ Basketball and Nike+ training! We just hope we don't have to wait too long until Nike Football gets treated to the same technology! Which performance monitoring features would you like Nike bring to their line of soccer shoes? Let us know and share your thoughts online, on Twitter and on Facebook.
