Talking points from around Europe.
A huge week in terms of Champions League football was followed by an even bigger weekend in terms of the league. Liverpool recorded a massive win over Manchester City, Yaya Toure looks like his season could have ended and Atletico pulled away at the top of La Liga. With only a handful of games left to go the season could not get any more exciting. Here are ten things we learnt from this weekend.
Chelsea Challenging - Their manager is doing his very best to make sure his little horse is sheltered and indeed written off as the crunch part of the season gets going, but Chelsea are going to be there or there abouts. As if their huge win against PSG was not enough, Demba Ba managed to be the hero yet again scoring the winner to put the Blues right back in the title race.
Is this the weakest Barcelona team in years? – After their Champions League exit, it was time to bounce back and get back to focusing on the domestic double they could win. However, a huge blow was dealt to the Cules with a sloppy defeat to lowly Granada. You have to wonder if Jose Mourinho was right.
Di Maria's Cheer – The sale of Mesut Ozil was widely condemned in Madrid, but given the form of Angel Di Maria, you have to wonder why. The Argentine is having the game of his life and has become a pivotal part of Carlo Ancelotti’s side - should Ronaldo not make the Copa final, he will have another chance to shine.
Advantage Madrid – The title looks to be on its way to Madrid – although to which side yet we could not tell you. Both sides have to face tough Champions League ties, and that may well hamper them in the league, but what a victory it would be for either side to be crowned Liga Campeones.
Honouring the 96 – Giving a post match rousing speech, Stevie G broke down in tears, and it was no wonder. A huge victory against Manchester City now leaves Liverpool with four games to go and the title in their hands. On a special and poignant weekend, there was no better way to honour the fallen fans.
Get dusting the Arsenal trophy cabinet - They may have just edged past Wigan but it was job done for Arsenal, this is the cup not the league, a win's a win. Through to the next round with Hull City standing in the way of some much awaited silverware.
Pressure for Pep - Losing before the Manchester United game is pretty understandable – not that the Bayern fans took that logic of course, but to getting battered by a very inferior BVB side in your own back yard is not a good look. A three nil defeat has put Guardiola under huge pressure and despite already having secured the Bundesliga, he simply has to win the Champions League for this season to be considered a success.
Costa's bummed out but lives to fight another day – He may have missed a penalty after being distracted by a mooning Getafe fan, but Diego Costa managed to get himself on the score sheet and injured all at the same time after crashing into the post. Sadly for Chelsea fans, he will be fit for the semi-finals after all, as his manager says, it takes more than a cut to injure this tiger.
Barca favour for Real – The last Liga game sees Atletico Madrid play Barcelona. Atletico Madrid have a four point gap over Barcelona and there's a possibility that Barca may be mathematically out of the title race by then. There's a strong chance that if Barca beat Atletico then they'd be handing the title to Real Madrid. Dilemma.
Everton's to lose – In what looks like being a golden season for those on Merseyside, Everton are into the top four. They may have the toughest run in, with Manchester City yet to face, but according to their manager, they are fully ready to break into the Champions League places. David who?
