BT have announced that they'll be broadcasting FIFA 17 matches live on television after winning rights to show the remaining four EA FIFA Majors in this year’s Ultimate Team Championship Series. Cos, ya know, there's not enough live football on TV these days.
For the first time ever, BT will start broadcasting the international regional finals in March with the winner of the Ultimate Championship Series getting a six-figure sum. For playing Fifa. Mental, right? But not as mental as putting it live on TV for the world to watch. We like the idea of a global audience watching a menu screen after a player realises he's got Pro Evo buttons still set up and needs to change them. Although it's probably more organised than that.
The remaining four EA FIFA Majors will all be screened live, starting next month with the North American regional final in Vancouver on 8 April. That will be followed by the Asia-Pacific regional final in Singapore on 22 April, the European regional final in Madrid on 6 April and the FIFA 17 Ultimate Team Championship Final in Berlin on 20 and 21 May. The winner of this year’s series stands to win nearly £130,000, while the runner-up will receive almost £65,000. Modern football, eh? Ah well, drinking FIFA just got a bit more interesting.
