It was the anthem of the summer (Sorry, Will Grigg) that echoed around stadiums and pubs from Caens to Cardiff, and now 'Don't Take Me Home' is the official title of a new film highlighting the story of Wales' EURO 2016 campaign.
Produced by football's finest film-maker, Jonny Owen, 'Don't Take Me Home' is in safe hands. Owen directed 'I Believe in Miracles' documenting the story of how Brian Clough led Nottingham Forest to two unlikely European Cup triumphs, and now he's turned his attentions to a summer that saw a passionate Welsh side compete at a major tournament for the first time in over 60 years. Defying their tiny nation status Wales left France as the proudest, most vocal of underdogs the tournament had the pleasure of watching.
The highlight of the Wales run was beating tournament favourites Belgium to the reach the semi-finals – but the film focuses on the heartache and struggle of oh-so-close qualifications of past as well as focusing on the players, managers and supporters in France. There's an ancient Welsh saying, “Yma o Hyd” which translates as, “we're still here” – a defiantly apt statement for the Summer of '16.
'Don't Take Me Home' will be released on March 3rd in selective cinemas. Although special previews will be screening across Wales and select UK locations to mark St David’s Day on 1st March. Select cinemas & buy tickets here.
