Bringing the three stripes back to North London, adidas and Arsenal have announced a partnership that will run from 2019 through to 2024 in a deal rumoured to be worth £300m.
Announced officially on Arsenal's Twitter account, it will see three stripes don the Arsenal sleeves for the first time since the 1993/1994 season in a deal worth a reported £60 million per year. Taking effect from July 1, 2019 following a 25 year hiatus, it'll be with great expectation that the two re-unite once more. The return of the German brand will excite many Arsenal fans, some of who will have fond memories of the iconic adidas kit that the side wore during the 1988/89 title win, when the league was won at Anfield in the final minutes of the season.
Arsenal's short time with PUMA in a deal first signed back in 2014 as the biggest in British football history at the time, has been one of mixed feelings from fans. The tight fitting shirts have blended style and high performance substance and, while met with some positive reviews, has at times divided the fan base. For adidas, it sees them restore roots in London after Chelsea cut ties in favour of Nike in 2017.
The club’s decision to reunite with adidas has been well received by supporters and former players. Ian Wright, a trailblazer for the club during its original adidas era, welcomed the news on Instagram by posting an image of the ‘bruised banana’ away strip he wore for his debut in 1991.
