Germany Women Star In Powerful Squad Announcement Ad

As the Women’s World Cup draws nearer, preparations gather pace. One of the favourites for the tournament are two-time World Cup winners and eight-time European champions Germany, who have made waves ahead of the competition with their squad announcement video.

The build up to this summer’s World Cup has seen some inventive ways of announcing squads, including England’s use of celebrities and professional athletes, but Germany have taken the opportunity to entwine a strong message of female empowerment along with a push for equality – a pressing issue in the Women’s game – within their announcement video.

The video, made by sponsor Commerzbank in partnership with the national team and posted by broadcaster DW Sports, features the squad and their manager Martina Voss-Tecklenburg addressing the abuse they have faced in the women's game. Lyon midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan opens the commercial alongside Bayern Munich playmaker Melanie Leupolz and Wolfsburg forward Alexandra Popp, who will all feature at the World Cup in France next month. It goes on to feature Turbine Potsdam forward Svenja Huth, Wolfsburg midfielder Sara Doorsoun-Khajeh and Bayern Munich midfielder Sara Dabritz alongside graphics and archive footage illustrating the team's success through the years.

Germany open their World Cup campaign against China on 8 June.
