No World Cup campaign is complete without an accompanying song, and the Lionesses' assault on the World Cup in France this summer is no different. That’s why they’ve been given a rewrite of 'Three Lions', England’s most famous football anthem.
Under the guidance of Phil Neville, the England Women’s team has enjoyed its first taste of success at the 2019 SheBelieves cup, a mini-tournament that acts as something of a taster for the main event to come in the summer. And that victory, along with a string of top performances and a squad littered with talent, has led to a real sense that this could be the year that an England senior team finally brings home the most coveted prize in world football.
The rewritten song comes courtesy of Lucozade’s campaign for the tournament and with the full blessing of original song writers, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner. The new version sees the focus shifting from the usually low-expectations of the England team to the sexist attitudes shown towards the female game. This follows bold moves from the likes of the German national team along with Nike’s strong "Dream Crazier" campaign and overall support of female athletes and the USWNT. It’s all evidence of the huge shift in the perception of the women’s game as we head towards what many believe will be the biggest Women’s World Cup in history in terms of viewership.
England get their World Cup campaign underway against Scotland on 9 June.
