The one and only Diego Armando Maradona is set to be back on our screens once more, and this time it’s streaming giants Netflix that will turn their focus on to the legendary player, with a docs-series titled ‘Maradona in Mexico’.
Earlier this year, Academy Award-winning director Asif Kapadia released his sensational documentary ‘Diego Maradona’, which focused on the Argentine's controversial time as a player for Napoli. And now Netflix are weighing in with their own look at the legend, and specifically at his time with Mexican second division side Dorados de Sinaloa, where he was brought in as an unlikely saviour with the task of dragging the team from relegation.
From September 2018 to June 2019 Maradona took the helm of the Mexican second-division side, guiding them from 13th place in the 15-team league, to within a whisker of promotion, in what ended up being a remarkable and quite improbable story. People initially questioned what interest the 1986 World Cup winner, who has publicly battled drug addiction and alcoholism, could have in moving to Culiacán, the heart of the Sinaloa Cartel, and a place better known for drug cartels than football. But with an emphatic series of wins, he answered his critics, and ‘Maradona in Mexico’ takes a closer look behind the scenes at this eventful period (are there any uneventful periods?) in the enigmatic Argentine's life.
Maradona in Mexico will be on Netflix from 13 November.
