David Beckham has checked in to take a look at the progress of Inter Miami's new stadium. Rolling into town along with fellow owner Jorge Mas, Beckham was met by fans and construction workers who are prepping ahead of the club’s inaugural 2020 season. The countdown is on.
Inter Miami know that they'll play their first ever MLS game away at LAFC on March 1st 2020, but there's still a lot of work to do before the club can host their first game at their new stadium, for the upcoming season they'll play their home games at Lockhart Stadium, an 18,000 capacity venue that’s currently under construction in Fort Lauderdale.
The Freedom Park site and stadium are set to be completed by 2022, so in the meantime Inter Miami will play their home matches for their opening two MLS seasons at Lockhart Stadium, before finally moving into their permanent 26,000 capacity home in 2022. A head coach still needs to be appointed, as well as bulking their squad ahead of a pre-season that will see Beckham's project finally come to life.
