Kylian Mbappé marked the launch of his first ever signature Nike collection by hosting an exclusive event last night at the French Football Federation's national stadium, the Stade de France. Inspired by his hometown of Bondy, the collection was worn by the next generation to signify Mbappé's journey to where he is now.
Mbappé's debut collection marks a new generation Nike Football as the Swoosh select the Frenchman to lead their brand into a new decade, and the focus was very much on youth as Mbappé invited a number of Parisian kids to the iconic stadium for a first training session in the new Mercurial boots and clothing collection. Each player was kitted out in pieces from Mbappé's training range before the man himself put the kids through their paces on the hallowed turf of the national team.
It's a significant drop that propels the Frenchman into the front of Nike's plans. The past decade was indisputably ruled with a Swoosh by Cristiano Ronaldo, and while he's hardly on the scrapheap yet, Nike are setting their sights on a new icon of speed: step forward Kylian Mbappé. The PSG striker, along with teammate Neymar will be Nike's duo of attackers with signature collections to lead the line into a new decade.
The boots, along with the Air Max 98 sneakers, feature his 'KM' logo, French flag, then there’s the appearance of the circled T-90-esque 93 on the insole of the right shoe. 93 is the administrative number of Seine-Saint-Denis in France, the area in which Mbappe’s home town of Bondy resides. The area is often referred to simply as the 93.
