Ready for another dose of football-related ups and downs? (Mostly downs, let’s face it.) Good, ‘coz Netflix have released the trailer for season 2 of ‘Sunderland ’Til I Die’, the original fly-on-the-wall look at the runnings of a club on the brink. And, well, do we really need to tell you how this one ends?
Sunderland have probably never been known as trendsetters, but in fairness to the club (and if we don’t count the god-awful Being: Liverpool from 2012) they pretty much kickstarted the football-focused docu-series craze that has since swept up the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham, Leeds United, Borussia Dortmund and most recently, Paris Saint-Germain. But while all of those teams have documentaries housed on Amazon, Sunderland started it all with their big rivals, Netflix, and it’s with them that the journey now continues with news of the imminent arrival of season 2 of ‘Sunderland ’Til I Die’.
After the first series, which followed the doomed start under Simon Grayson and Chris Coleman's brief stint at the club, the return will focus on owner Stuart Donald and the club's continued push for promotion back to the Championship. And yet another unhappy ending. Honestly makes you wonder why they keep coming back for more.
Produced once again by Fulwell 73, a company owned by Sunderland fans and named after a stand at Roker Park, the club’s former home, the second series promises yet more ammunition for Newcastle fans to taunt the Black Cats faithful with.
Executive producer Benjamin Turner said: “For years we’ve held our arms aloft at Sunderland AFC games and sang ‘we’re by far the greatest team the world has ever seen’. Series two confirms that whilst this may not be entirely true on the pitch, Sunderland AFC are in a league of their own as a subject for a documentary series.
"The focus this year is the unfolding drama of the new owners trying to meet the immense challenge they set themselves by buying the football club. The access they gave us provides the audience a front row seat for what is one hell of a ride.”
Sunderland 'Til I Die will be available on Netflix from 1 April.
