Swissx, one of the world’s leading producers of Cannabidiol products, is in talks with Everton to become the shirts new sponsor, following the news from earlier this year that the club would end its partnership agreement with SportPesa at the end of the current season, two years ahead of schedule.
Swissx was founded by billionaire Alki David, and it is one of the world’s leading producers of Cannabidiol products, which, as the name might suggest, are cannabis based. And news has emerged that the company is currently in talks with Everton over a deal to take over as the club's main kit sponsor. This comes just days after the entrepreneur CEO of Swissx revealed he had spoken to Barcelona regarding naming rights for Camp Nou, which the Catalan Club announced recently they would sell for the first time, donating the revenue to fighting coronavirus.
While that deal looks to have reached something of an impasse, David and Swissx have now turned their attention to Everton. The Toffees linked up with SportPesa in 2017 but after performing a review of the club's “commercial strategy” they decided to part company with the African betting company and will have a new main sponsor in place for the 2020/21 campaign, an opening that Swissx could well fill. It could also accompany another switch for the club, as rumours suggest that they could also be moving from current kit suppliers Umbro.
"They [Everton] contacted me and have already offered designs with the whole SwissX logo in blue, which I'm not crazy about, but it will look nice,” explained David in an interview with the Insider. "When I first came to England, everybody was supporting Man United and Liverpool, and everybody was red. Being contrary, I liked blue and I liked the logo so randomly I selected Everton to support. So it's sort of a mystical come around.”
Should Everton partner with SwissX, it would be the first club in Premier League history to have a cannabis-based product as its shirt sponsor. With all of the gambling logos and the alcohol-related brands, this isn’t a massive stretch, and a minimalist all-blue sponsor logo? We could definitely get behind that. Besides, David is at pains to point out what Swissx is, despite outward perceptions: "My brand is not a fucking marijuana brand, it's a wellness CBD brand based on health, not based on recreation."
Likely to happen? Could certainly make for a more relaxed changing room atmosphere...
