Confirming one of the worst kept secrets in recent times, adidas have announced that Jurgen Klopp has joined the brand as a global ambassador, and they’ve hinted at big things to come, starting on 5 October…
Reports back in the beginning of August suggested that, despite Liverpool commencing a historical new partnership with Nike, their talismanic manager, Jurgen Klopp, looked set to be signing for the Swoosh’s bitter rivals adidas. With Klopp since being seen regularly in adidas footwear, both on the training pitch and on the sidelines, it was a no-brainer that this rumour had weight. And sure enough, today adidas have confirmed that the German has signed with them.
"Jürgen Klopp and the adidas brand both share an unconditional passion for football and the pursuit of excellence. Yet despite his success, he is always down-to-earth and never loses sight of what is important in life. He is much more than 'The Normal One', he is 'The Original One'. We are very proud of this partnership," said adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted.
"I have always been a big fan of the 'Three Stripes'," said Klopp in response. "For me, the adidas brand embodies a long tradition and deep roots in sport. I am looking forward to the future cooperation.”
With both Klopp and adidas hailing from Germany, combined with the brand’s heritage in the game, the fit seems a natural one. Slightly jarring, however – certainly for Nike at least – is the sight of the Liverpool manager decked out in his LFC Nike clothing only to be finished off by adidas footwear. But it’s a sight we’ll soon get used to when the Premier League returns this weekend.
Just something gloriously right about The Normal One in a pair of Copa Mundials…
