Perhaps somewhat unsurprisingly, reports have emerged that Paris Saint-Germain have activated a year-long extension to their existing €200million three-year deal with Jordan, taking the highly successful partnership into the 2021/2022 season.
The collaboration between PSG and Jordan brand was one of the biggest and most revolutionary in the game, crossing borders between football and basketball for the first time ever, and opening the doors to a new wave of what was possible in the realms of football fashion, and starting a new chapter in football culture. The initial collection in 2018 has since been followed in the subsequent seasons, and with the original deal nearing its end, it looks like an extension is a step closer to when it was initially reported back in April of last year.
Given the unprecedented demand for the kits and accompanying clothing collections and the overall success of the collaboration, it’s no real surprise that PSG would want to trigger the extension. The revenue from the existing deal, thought to be in the region of €200 million for the existing three-year deal, goes a long way to PSG being compliant with FIFA’s financial fair play rulings, something the club would be keen to continue.
The move follows one of PSG’s star players, Kylian Mbappé recently making similar cross-sport moves, with Nike honouring both him and NBA superstar LeBron James with the ‘Chosen 2’ pack, something that likely wouldn’t have happened without the precedence of the Jordan deal, although fellow PSG forward Neymar has enjoyed some cross over in the past.
