Ready to own a piece of footballing history? Well sort of anyway. Well now’s your chance, with news that the late, great Diego Maradona’s extremely rare Porsche 911 Carrera is heading to auction this March.
It’s no secret that Maradona enjoyed the finer things in life, and among these dalliances was a penchant for fine automobiles. During his one oft-forgotten season with Sevilla in 1992, the Argentinian legend picked up a 1992 Porsche 911 Type 964 Carrera 2 Convertible Works Turbo Look (WTL), and following his untimely passing, the car will now be offered at auction for the first-time next month in Bonhams Les Grand Marques Du Monde à Paris Sale.
One of just 1,200 964 Carrera 2 Convertible Works Turbo Look variants produced in a two-year run – a true supercar of its day – the 911 was powered by a 250bhp 3.6-litre Carrera 2 engine, with a top speed of 260km/h. The Porsche was a regular sight to fans on his drive to and from football training. It also proved that Maradona's right foot was as dominant in the car as his left was on the ball as he was famously stopped by armed police, for jumping a red light and speeding at 180km/h in the city centre.
Despite clocking up 120,000 km on the speedometer, the 911 Carrera is still in “practically original” condition, and it is expected that the car will fetch an estimated price of €150,000 – 200,000. “We are delighted to present this quintessential 90s Porsche with its very colorful and unique provenance, which will appeal to many football enthusiast collectors worldwide,” explained Paul Darvill, Bonhams European auctions manager.
