It was green (and black) to go at the Q2 Stadium, as Austin FC got life as a MLS club underway in front of a capacity crowd, who generated an electric atmosphere, gee’d up by club owner Matthew McConaughey.
Austin FC played their inaugural MLS match at the Q2 Stadium in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,738 on Saturday, drawing 0-0 against San Jose Earthquakes. The game marked the debut of top-flight professional sports in the city, and for the occasion minority owner Matthew McConaughey donned a Verde & Black suit and led the stadium in a pre-game chant, while supporters unveiled their debut tifo celebrating a crew of Austin legends and the city’s history and culture. It appears as though football has found a new home in one of America’s most vibrant cities…
The River City became a soccer haven as a loud and proud capacity crowd gave their team everything, and the team responded in kind, providing everything but a goal in their first game in their new home. There was, however, plenty of goalmouth action to keep fans entertained. With McConaughey performing his role as “Minister of Culture” with aplomb, the club has already started to mark itself out with a unique identity that’s a welcome addition to the league. Still seeking their first MLS win, but the atmosphere was electric, the stadium lived up to its billing, and things are looking bright for the future of football around Texas’ capital city.
Austin FC are next in action on Thursday 24 June when they travel to Minnesota.
