One thing you can’t say about Wayne Rooney’s playing career is that it was dull. Littered with headline grabbing moments both on and off the pitch, it is now the subject of and Amazon Prime documentary titled simply, ‘Rooney’, and is due out early next year.
We miss Wayne Rooney on the pitch. His management career hasn’t yet hit the heights of his playing career, but to be fair, was it ever going to? This is a player who went on to become the all-time top scorer for both Manchester United and England, racking up countless trophies and individual accolades on the way. But along with the highs on the pitch came some pretty sizeable lows off it. All in all, it serves to tell quite the tale and is now the focus of Amazon Prime’s latest football-related documentary, ‘Rooney’.
The documentary has been directed by BAFTA winner Matt Smith and it’s set to feature insights not only from the man himself, with him opening up on his mental health and providing an insight into some big moments in his career during, but also contributions from former team-mates David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville, plus former Three Lions boss Sven-Goran Eriksson. Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, plus Rooney's wife, Coleen, and other friends and family are also set to feature.
"I want people to have a better understanding of me as a person really," said Rooney. "I wanted to be honest and touch on everything that has happened in my life, which is important. If I do it and I am not honest or I don't speak about things, it wouldn't be real, so it was about me coming out and people seeing me and my family for who we are, and not what is being portrayed of us as a family."
Martin Buckland, head of content at Prime Video UK and Nordics, said in a statement: "'Rooney' is an honest and intimate documentary about one of the country’s most famous sports stars who has faced untold pressure from a very young age.
"Prime members will get to hear from Wayne himself on the events and moments that shaped who he was as a player and who he is as a man."
'Rooney' will be available to Prime members in early 2022.
