With the countdown very much on to the 2019 Women's World Cup, adidas have begun to roll out the kits for their partnered nations. Starting in their own backyard, the Three Stripes have unveiled the 2019 DFB home shirt to be worn by the Germans in France this summer.
Landing as a homage to 1989 – the year that they won the European Championship title in the own country – the new home jersey represents a breakthrough period for women's football in Germany including the semi-final being the first women's national team that was broadcast live on television. Bespoke to the women's team, the new shirt will be worn when Germany kick off this World Cup campaign in Rennes on June 8 when they take on China.
"It was important to us, that the DNA of the team and their history was visible through the colours and design" said Linn Sickert, Designer at adidas Football. "At the same time we edited them with new, digital filters - and interpreted them in a modern way. The black-red-golden graphic was used for more horizontal lines to make it even more dynamic."
The graphics and colours on the chest are reminiscent of the jerseys used by women in 1989 and men to win major tournaments in 1990. Not a bad omen for their upcoming assignment in France. The timeless kit is completed by black shorts and white socks. The away jersey of the DFB women is burgundy, and the goalkeepers will play in blue.
