What better way to launch a new kit than to wear it as you win your 34th league title, completing an impressive domestic double. That’s the way Ajax roll anyway, as they launched their new 2019/20 away shirt from adidas just prior to their crunch clash with De Graafschap.

Ajax turned up for their last game of the season knowing that if they avoided defeat they would be lifting their 34th league title and their first since 2014. But playing to avoid defeat is just not their way, and as such they demolished De Graafschap 1-4, winning the title in style. And they did so while debuting their new adidas 2019/20 away kit; a move that takes some minerals. Imagine the stigma attached to the shirt if they’d lost? Well that doesn’t matter now, as going into next season it will be remembered as the shirt they won the title in. Not a bad start to its existence.

Arriving in a base green with orange accents, the away kit takes on a similar appearance to Ajax’s new training collection. Darker vertical stripes are offset internally by further diagonal shades that lend the shirt a nice texture. The shirt will be joined by shorts and socks of the same colour scheme. The away shirt arrives days after the launch of the new home kit, which comes in a much more traditional aesthetic for the Amsterdam-based outfit.

It has been a fantastic season for this young Ajax team, but the appearance in the new away shirt will be the last for several of their promising young stars, with Frankie de Jong already signed for Barcelona, and the likes of captain Matthijs de Ligt likely to leave, lending the shirt’s debut a bittersweet tinge. Not a bad way to bow out though.
