Stripping back the design for a more traditional take, Nike launch the Atletico Madrid 19/20 home shirt, which takes influence from the kit that the club wore when they won the Europa League back in 2010, a moment that kick started one of their most successful periods in history.
While Nike have dabbled with the look of the classic red and white striped look of Atletico Madrid’s home shirts over the last two seasons, the 2019/20 rendition reverts to a more classic look. Gone are the blurred graphics and segmented stripes of the 17/18 and 18/19 seasons, replaced by a cleaner, more traditional look that harks back to a huge moment in the club’s history.
Inspired by the 2010 shirt in which Atletico won the Europa League in Hamburg – Aguero and Forlan undoing Fulham in extra time – the 2019/20 shirt does away with the collar from that period, but adopts the four white and five red stripes that run throughout the body and on to the raglan sleeves. On the inside, there’s the year of the club’s foundation – 1903 – along with a trident of Neptune, which symbolises the club’s bond with the city of Madrid and the fountain where they celebrate their titles. A Spanish flag is then present on the back of the neck of the shirt.
The 2010 win sparked the most successful period in the club’s history, during which time the men’s team lifted one La Liga, three Europa Leagues, one Copa del Rey, three UEFA Super Cups and one Spanish Super Cup, while the women’s side also won three leagues and one cup. Next year will mark the ten year anniversary of the catalytic 2010 win, and Nike have been quick to pay homage with this design.
