In honour of their loyal fanbase, Corinthians have launched their 2019/20 away shirt from Nike, with the design celebrating the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Gaviões Da Fiel, the team’s biggest supporters group.
Following the launch of the El-Fenomeno-inspired home kit recently, Nike have now launched the Corinthians 2019/20 away shirt, and it’s an elegant little number as it is, with a nice black canvas accentuated by some white trim. What you will notice however, is that the on-pitch variation is somewhat tarnished/embellished (depending on your stance) by a host of sponsors logos that are thankfully/unfortunately not present here. Yep, this is a divisive one; just how many sponsors are too many? And is there a tipping point where too many becomes a good thing? A conversation for another day, because it doesn’t really matter here, as the only one that’s available for retail is the minimalistic, sponsor-free version.
The Gaviões da Fiel that the new away shirt pays tribute to were founded on 1 July 1969 and were the first organised supporters group in Brazil. One of the main purposes of the group’s formation was to help remove then-club president Wadih Helu. Since then, the group have been extremely involved in many political decisions as well as social stances that the club have taken in later years, including the famous Corinthians’ Democracy during the Sócrates era.
Despite playing at home, Corinthians wore their new sponsor-laden away jersey this weekend against Gremio, and you can see it in more detail here.
