Southampton have taken the tongue firmly wedged in cheek approach to launching their new Under Armour home and away kits for 2019/20, releasing a mockumentary on the greatest kit launch that never happened.
In a time when kit reveals are part and parcel of the drama of the modern game, it’s refreshing to have a bit of a laugh with it all, and that’s exactly what Southampton have done, revealing their new home and away shirts for 2019/20 with a spoof documentary, titled ‘Saynts Festival’, parodying the recent Netflix ‘Fyre’ documentary.
Hosted by Mbilly McFarmer, a visionary who "likes to smile", the documentary reveals the shirts through his attempts to sell his dream of hosting Southampton's 2019/20 reveal on a desert island to Ralph Hasenhüttl and the Saints squad. He promises events such as a free-kick masterclass with James Ward-Prowse, morning training sessions with club legend Iron-Fran Benali as well as Shane-Long Island ice teas. Top effort from the Saints' media team.
Oh, yeah, and there’s the shirts too, of course. The Saints’ new home kit sees the iconic red and white stripes on the front as expected, accented this time with black shoulders and trim on the sleeves. The away kit has been produced with a grey base and contrasting volt-yellow shoulders and sleeve accents, making for a striking combination. Let’s just not talk about the new LD sponsor logos though, OK?
The Southampton 2019/20 home and away shirts will be available for pre-order from 20 May.
