Borussia Dortmund went full dark mode at the weekend by debuting their special edition blackout PUMA kit in a 5-0 win over Dusseldorf at Signal Iduna Park. Launched to celebrate the club's 100th birthday, the design is a nod to the rich industrial identity of the Dortmund region.
The special edition kit, which took fans by surprise ahead of kick off coincidently also caught the club by surprise as it sold out in a matter of minutes, helped no doubt by braces from Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho and another goal from Thorgan Hazard. The unexpected drop even crashed to BVB official online store at one point, such was the demand.
One year on from the end of the coal industry in the Ruhr area, Borussia Dortmund marked the moment in a black shirt, shorts and socks, which included the logos of all partners: Evonik, PUMA, Opel and the Bundesliga. After all, BVB and the city of Dortmund were born out of coal and steel. One of the hottest football shirts from the 2019/20 season? Has to be doesn't it?
A further batch of the special edition shirts aren't expected to be produced, so if you did manage to get your hands on one, hold it close. The Borussia Dortmund blackout jersey is the latest celebratory shirt from PUMA, with the brand releasing a commemorative home jersey for AC Milan earlier this month to celebrate the club’s 120th anniversary, just 1,899 individually numbered shirts were released, although PUMA haven't put a number on the Dortmund blackout shirts.
Yeah, we all missed out here didn't we?
