Inspired by the iconic design from ’92 – one of the most recognisable in the club’s history – adidas launch the Manchester United 21/22 away shirt. It will be worn for the first time on pitch on the 31 July when the Red Devils play away at Preston.
Manchester United have been making some big moves in the transfer market, building a squad that could well be capable of making some waves in the near future. But for their new away kit, adidas have looked to the past for inspiration, much as they did with the new home shirt. For the away though, it’s back to ’92, reworking the iconic snowflake design by taking “Cloud White” and “Glory Blue” and bringing them together as part of an optical art pattern engineered into the fabric.
Much like the ’92 version, red is used as a contrasting colour on the sponsor, branding and club crest. The shirt is complemented by Glory Blue shorts in a nod to the striking blue away jersey of 1968 that the European Cup-winning team wore in the final, whilst the socks also feature the blue and white optical art pattern.
It’s not the first time in recent memory that the iconic design has been brought back into focus, with Pharrell using it as inspiration for the Human Race collection, although that only featured in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in the 20/21 campaign. In contrast, the new away shirt will obviously be in full focus when United are on the road this season.
