The battle for the best kit in the DStv Premiership continues, with Umbro and Cape Town City getting in on the act with the club’s new home and away shirt, which has dropped days ahead of the 21/22 season kick off.
South Africa is fast becoming our favourite place for new shirt designs, with brands revelling in the vibrancy of the culture to bring some of the best bespoke shirts we’ve seen this season. Following the recently launched Mamelodi Sundowns home and away shirts from PUMA, which in turn followed the Orlando Pirates from adidas and Kaizer Chiefs from Nike, Umbro now get in on the competition with two bold designs for Cape Town City.
Still in its relative infancy following its reformation back in 2016, Umbro are enjoying the freedom that comes with playing with the continually developing identity of the club. For the home shirt, that means a fresh take for the blue and yellow formula, with a sublimated swirling graphic dominating the body. As with past designs and following in their Boca-esque look, a yellow band stretches across the centre, housing the new “Direct Axis” sponsor. While we appreciate that the yellow band is an intrinsic part of the home shirt’s traditional look, here it is a little jarring, laying across the swirl effect and detracting from its impact somewhat.
For the away shirt it’s all about the sleeves. The white base in the body features black crest and sponsor, leaving full focus on the vibrant sleeves, which are split between left and right. For the right, it’s a monochromatic design that ties in with the feel of the body, but the madness is saved for the left sleeve, which features psychedelia blend of hyper pinks, blues and blacks for a look that would be fitting of Inter Miami. All eyes on South Africa…
