Celebrating 150 years of existence, Scotland have released a special anniversary shirt from adidas, and it features a design inspired by the kit worn by the Scotland team in their first ever international match in 1873 against England.
The Scotland National Team has a rich history stretching back 150 years – from taking to the pitch at Hamilton Crescent for the first ever international football match against England, to more recently seeing both Men’s and Women’s National Teams qualify for major tournaments. But it’s not every year that you turn 150, and so to celebrate the occasion, Adidas have produced a special 150 year anniversary edition kit, which the men’s team will debut in their UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier against Cyprus on Saturday, 25 March, while the Scotland Women’s National Team will wear the shirt against Costa Rica at Hampden Park on Tuesday, 11 April.
The shirt draws inspiration from the first “uniform” worn by the Scotland players in the historic first match against England in 1872, and it reflects the nation's football heritage with a simple design. Dominated by the traditional dark blue, it’s finished with a round white collar and woven crest. The Lion Rampant is highlighted in gold against a tonal crest, so as to match the look of the first crest worn on early Scotland shirts. The striped sleeve cuffs give a nod to the importance of Queen’s Park FC, who formed the basis of Scotland’s earliest national team all those years ago.
To further mark the 150th Anniversary, the shirt will also be worn by the Scotland Men’s National Team in the special Anniversary Heritage friendly match against England at Hampden Park on Tuesday, 12 September.
