Atletico Madrid Celebrate 120th Anniversary With Special Kit From Nike

On April 26th Atletico Madrid celebrate their 120th anniversary and for the occasion Nike have provided the La Liga side with a special edition kit inspired by the one worn by the first Atlético de Madrid players in the club’s history, and it will be worn against Mallorca on Wednesday, 26 April.

120 years ago, on 26 April 1903, a group of Basque students living in Madrid teamed up with members of the Biscayan team to found the club we know today as Atletico Madrid. At the time it was a branch of Athletic Club, and it adopted the colours of the Biscayan team, who at that time wore blue and white. And so, to celebrate the club’s 120 year anniversary, Nike have created a kit inspired by the one worn all those years ago, arriving in blue and white and with the original club crest on the chest.

The shirt itself is the current Nike template, but the red and white that is synonymous with the club is subbed out, having not become part of the club’s identity until 1911. Prior to this the club played in blue and white, and so it is this scene that is reintroduced in a 50/50 split in the body, with the sleeves in blue and the collar and cuffs in white. The WhaleFin.com sponsor tweaks its tone ever so slightly to fit in with the aesthetics of the overall design, while the Swoosh branding appears in white.

Atletico will wear this new kit this Wednesday, 26 April, in La Liga game against Mallorca, just as the first Atleti players did in their historic debut.

The Atletico Madrid 120 anniversary jersey is available from 10am on Tuesday 25 April in the club's physical shops in the Community of Madrid and on their online store.
