This weekend saw Bayern Munich debut their new home shirt for 23/24 in their defeat to RB Leipzig. But as well as the new home kit, ahead of the match they also showed off their new prematch jersey for the coming campaign.

At the end of last week, Bayern Munich launched their new home kit for 23/24 from adidas under the banner “Rot & Weiß ein Leben lang” (roughly translated to "red & white for life"), and it introduced a somewhat controversial design in that, despite the phrase, white was by far the more dominant colour over red. It’s not an unprecedented move for the Bundesliga side, and indeed, the look actually harks back to the kit worn by Bayern in their first season in the German top flight. But that hasn’t stopped some people being slightly irked by the look. However, as well as debuting the new kit on the weekend, they also showed off their new prematch attire, and it’s a look that could’ve easily worked as a home kit.

The first thing that the prematch shirt does that will please not in favour of the new home design is that it comes mainly in red. That’s then overlaid by an all-over stylised graphic in white, which looks similar to the rhombus design that features on the Bayern club crest. The collar is red, with the adidas Performance logo and club crest taking on white.

It’s the latest example of adidas going above and beyond in their expanded club repertoire following the new Juventus prematch shirt, while it’s also the latest in the list of prematch designs that easily could’ve – and perhaps should’ve – been match day kits.
