Following on from the return of the Denmark 1986 World Cup kit, Hummel are sticking with the retro vibes, this time kitting out Southampton in a recreation of their 1987-89 jersey worn by Matt Le Tissier, Alan Shearer, Franny Benali, and Wallace brothers Danny, Rod and Ray.
Danish sports brand hummel commemorates its 100th anniversary this year, and as part of the celebrations, they rereleased the cult Denmark 1986 World Cup kit, with the National Team wearing it during last week’s European Championship qualifier against Northern Ireland. Now that iconic template will continue to be in use through the whole 23/24 season, with hummel presenting it as Southampton’s new home shirt.
That template will, in fact, be in use by a total of nine clubs, with each choosing whether to use it as a home, away, or third jersey. Additionally, the jersey colours will be customised to suit each club's identity.
"Although the Danish ’86-jersey divided opinions at the time, it has since achieved great recognition and won several international awards as one of the most iconic designs of all time," Explained hummel CEO, Allan Vad Nielsen. "As part of our 100th anniversary, we’re incredibly proud to join forces with some of our biggest clubs to pay homage to this iconic masterpiece and showcase its eye-catching design on the pitch once again.”
For the Saints’ home shirt, the classic design has a slight twist as each of club’s 2023/24 season kits celebrate a different element of the team’s crest. The home shirt focuses on the Hampshire rose, with over a thousand small roses subtly printed into the shirt in a diagonal pattern. On the reverse of the shirt, at the nape of the neck, the Hampshire rose proudly sits symbolising the city of Southampton.
