In partnership with hummel, Real Betis, through its environmental sustainability platform ‘Forever Green’, have revealed a pioneering new shirt made from oranges to highlight the importance of urban green spaces.
Real Betis have never been shy about using the shirt as a canvas for something bigger. Through Forever Green – their sustainability platform launched in 2020 – the club have built a reputation for turning matchday into a platform for environmental issues. And for their upcoming LaLiga clash with Rayo Vallecano, they’ve taken things somewhere entirely new: a kit literally made from oranges. Yep, you read that right.
Matchday 25 will see Betis step out in a special‑edition Hummel design that pushes the boundaries of what a football shirt can be. It’s part retro experiment, part environmental call‑to‑action, and part love letter to Seville’s streets, where orange trees line the neighbourhoods and shape the identity of the city.
At first glance, the design is unmistakably Betis: that signature green dominating the look. But the palette goes deeper, layering in a darker tone pulled from orange‑tree leaves, finished with albero, the sandy, sun‑worn colour synonymous with Seville’s architecture and visual DNA. It’s a nod to the city’s heritage through a footballing lens, and it lands beautifully.
Then there’s the final flourish. The numbers arrive with a perforated pattern inspired by orange peel, a subtle cue that turns symbolic once you realise the tech behind it. Scratch‑and‑sniff ink, 100 percent chemical‑free and sustainably produced, releases the scent of orange blossom when rubbed. It’s an olfactory reminder of Seville itself, and a way of making the message felt as much as seen.
This year’s Forever Green theme – “Green living starts in the neighbourhood” – zooms in on the value of urban green spaces, especially the orange trees that act as the lungs of Seville’s barrios. The shirt becomes a storyteller, platforming the idea that sustainability isn’t abstract; it begins in the streets people walk every day. Turning oranges into clothing is the perfect metaphor: local, circular, tangible.
This shirt isn't just a one off, it's actually the fifth milestone in an initiative that began in 2022 against Athletic Club, a match that laid the foundations with a kit made from 100 percent recycled polyester, followed in 2023 against RCD Espanyol, a jersey that paid tribute to the “3 Rs” of ecology (reduce, reuse and recycle) through a distressed design.
The evolution of the project has made it possible to continue addressing critical environmental challenges, and in 2024, in the match against UD Almería, the focus was on responsible water management in the face of drought. More recently, in 2025 against Real Sociedad, the sustainability match highlighted the invasion of the Asian algae Rugulopteryx Okamurae on the Andalusian coast, transforming an environmental threat into an opportunity for circular reuse.
In a landscape where clubs seemingly release dozens of shirts every year, this one stands apart not by chasing hype, but by crafting purpose. It’s football culture doing what it does best: telling stories that go way beyond the pitch.
