adidas Launch The Copa Mundial 21 Primeknit

Once again blending iconic aesthetics with modern mechanics, adidas launch the Copa Mundial 21 Primeknit, which sees the timeless silhouette constructed from Primeknit and placed on the current COPA Sense soleplate.

The Copa Mundial has been a staple in the adidas lock up since its initial release way back in 1979. But it wasn’t until 2013 that the German brand dared to tinker with the pure essence of the boot when they released an inverted colourway, switching the black and white positioning. It was wild, it was revolutionary, and there were many that thought it borderline sacrilegious. And if that ruffled feathers, what came the following year would’ve really pushed them over the edge, when the Three Stripes launched a colourful array of Copa Mundials, inspired by the samba style of the 2014 world cup in Brazil. Among those bright paint jobs was a "Purple/White/Berry" colourway, and it is that look that is recreated for the Three Stripes' latest special edition drop, combining it with the modern Primeknit construction that was last seen on the COPA70 in 2019.

Much like the COPA70, the Copa Mundial 21 PK sees the traditional K-leather upper replaced by a Primeknit construction, while the main difference from the 2019 release is the updated tooling, with the Copa Mundial 21 riding in on the current COPA Sense soleplate. Again, as with the COPA70 release, this drop is rounded out by a Copa Mundial Primeknit TR. The colourway looks to be a fairly faithful recreation of the Samba release from 2014, although the laces adopt the same purple as the upper rather than the berry colouring of the OG. Then the soleplate also comes in the berry colour rather than white, which gives it more of a link to the current ‘Superspectral’ pack COPA Sense.

The Copa Mundial 21 PK has already been spotted on the feet of Ilkay Gündoğan, when he trained in them ahead of Manchester City’s Champions League clash with PSG, although he didn’t go on to wear them in the actual match. That will likely come down the line, with Mats Hummels, Kheira Hamraoui and Mary Earps all set to join him in wearing them on pitch.
