First Look At Nike's Upcoming '1971' Boot Relaunch

Taking it right back to the very beginning, Nike is set to rerelease its first ever football boot, which originally dropped way back in 1971 and saw the debut of the iconic Swoosh logo.

Well, this is a proper blast from the past. It looks like Nike are bringing back their first ever football boot, which makes sense given that it’s 50 years since the OG dropped. Originally known as ‘The Nike’, the boot was the first to carry the ‘Swoosh’ branding, which rode in white across the classic black leather upper. So impressive was the design, it shifted the position of the brand from then on.

So the look was iconic, but that original drop back in 1971 wasn’t without its problems… hence the reason that Nike abandoned football boots for another couple of decades, focussing instead on basketball, running and tennis footwear. But it marked a huge turning point in the brand’s burgeoning identity, with it being released under the ‘Blue Ribbon Sports’ branding.

The upcoming release looks to faithfully recreate the look of the original, and we’re therefore guessing that this is more likely to be a collectors piece rather than one to spot on pitch. Graphics referencing the Mexico 1970 World Cup are featured on the tongue and the insoles. While a white midsole atop a soleplate with classic 13 conical studs round up the design.

The Nike '1971' boot drops on 6 December and will be available at prodirectsoccer.com
