Bringing the next chapter of fast to football, Nike launch the Mercurial Dream Speed 5, which has been created to the exact specifications of Cristiano Ronaldo. As well as Ronaldo, a host of select Nike athletes will wear the boot over the coming weeks.
It’s already been spotted on the feet of Cristiano Ronaldo, but now the fifth instalment in the Mercurial Dream Speed franchise is officially unveiled by Nike. Following on from the Dream Speed 4, which dropped almost a year ago, the design inspiration of the DS5 comes from Ronaldo’s most powerful tool— the mind. The United striker has started doing yoga and positive mindset exercises to increase his output as his game evolves in the later stages of his career, and it is this that has influenced the look of the new boot.
According to Ronaldo – and who are we to argue – a calm mental state means strong decision making, so the boot plays with that in the "Barely Green/Volt/Electro Purple" colourway, slowly transitioning from a tranquil green into commanding hues of turquoise and purple, demonstrating the power generated by a restful aura. There’s a different Swoosh positioning to the 'Blueprint Pack' Mercurial, with a CR7 front Swoosh over the toe of the boot vs the Blueprint Mercurial, where it’s a double Swoosh on the side.
Available in both Superfly 8 and Vapor 14, the boots are set to be worn by a host of Nike’s best athletes, including Kylian Mbappé, Ansu Fati, Vinicius Jr., Ada Hegerberg, Bruno Fernandes, Sam Kerr, Brenden Aaronson, Wu Lei, Barbara Bonansea and Jessica Silva. It will be interesting to see if Erling Haaland wears the boots, having worn previous instalments in the franchise, but with reports suggesting he’s no longer a Nike athlete, it looks unlikely.
