Drawing on three prior models to celebrate legacy, speed and self-belief, Nike have dropped the Mercurial Dream Speed 009, the latest iteration of Nike's Dream Speed franchise.
Rounding out the series in style, Nike have dropped the latest and last instalment in the Mercurial Dream Speed franchise with the MDS 009. The latest Dream Speed silhouette draws on the series' original namesake, along with the 004 and 005 iterations, to celebrate legacy, speed and self-belief in a boot inspired by the game's fastest athletes. It manifests itself in a “Barely Green/Metallic Gold Coin” colourway that is a story in itself.
The distorted midfoot pattern represents breaking through barriers, the blue elements encourage mind flow and performance, while the orange promotes concentration and creativity. Then, as a nice final flourish, the Swoosh features the signature Dream Speed logo repeated in gold as a nod to goals and trophies – hallmarks of Mercurial players such as Kylian Mbappé and Sam Kerr, who’ll once again lace up in this edition, along with a host of the game’s fastest players, including Vinicius Jr., Lauren James, Marie-Antoinette Katoto and many more. Oh, and some guy called Cristiano Ronaldo, who may well have been the main inspiration and driving force behind the franchise in the first place.
Beyond the aesthetics, there’s also plenty going on tech-wise. The boot features a unique three-quarter-length Air Zoom unit underfoot, which provides springy acceleration, an integrated speed cage structure to keep feet locked in, and a Vaporposite+ upper, which combines a grippy, grid mesh with a premium lining for a more natural feel and optimal ball control. On the underside there’s the tri-star studs to provide multi-directional traction.
