Launched to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the partnership between Nike and the Premier League, the 2019/20 Merlin ball is inspired by the urban landscapes of England’s cities with its vivid graphics, while giving players an extra edge thanks to Nike’s latest innovations. A dazzling pink Nike swoosh and distinctive modular graphic borrows its look from the world-famous Nike Air footwear ranges, and this modular system also allows the graphic’s colours to be changed at will, so expect to see several different versions of the ball throughout the 2019/20 campaign.
The new design is the first bespoke Nike Merlin produced solely for the Premier League and is the culmination of a creative process driven by English football’s pulsating tempo and unique fan culture, as Kieran Ronan, GM, Nike Global Equipment explains; “We wanted to design a ball that specifically illustrated the traits of Premier League football. A ball that felt hyper-technical and precise in nature but also inspired by this English culture of living and breathing Premier League football.”
In terms of innovation, the 2019/20 Premier League Merlin benefits from four major technologies:
- The ball comprises just four fuse-welded panels to provide a bigger ‘sweet spot’ for ball striking.
- Heightened visual clarity for players and spectators because of the new graphic layout and striking colour combinations.
- Nike ‘Aerowtrack’ grooves on the ball will ensure a more consistent flight.
- Urban Grip, an updated version of Nike’s All Conditions Control (ACC) technology, is inspired by the terrain of English cities and will give enhanced traction whatever the surface or weather.
